2016 Cheeky Monkey Limited Release: French Connection

Inspired by the Classic French Bordeaux style, but made with New World Wines.

Enchanté Red and Déjà Vu White are exciting blends that will give you the feel of outstanding Bordeaux wines but the sultriness of the New World grapes that we use.

Déjà Vu White is a Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon blend that was a huge hit for us a few years ago. This wine is well rounded, smooth, and very dry. However for those with a sweeter tongue, we can either sweeten to taste in the winery or coach you how to accomplish this at home.

Enchanté Red is a classic French Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. The rich full berry flavours will match well with any BBQ meal or pot roast or stew as we head to fall.

All we can say about these two outstanding offerings is Mais Oui! Come in and get yours started today! Quantities are limited and are available on a first come, first served basis!

Passport Wine KitAglianico Cabernet Merlot – Campania | Tuscany | Veneto, Italy • Release Date February 2018

THE WINE
Aglianico, a full-bodied Italian varietal, adds personality to classic Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in a bold crimson blend. With rustic earthy flavours including spicy pepper, leather and tobacco to ripe plum and black fruits, this blend’s fine tannins provide a pleasing and not too astringent finish. The fruit and earth are in harmony creating a beautifully balanced red wine.

THE REGION
Campania, in the southwest Italian peninsula, has volcanic soil, a harsh climate and high altitude. These conditions are ideal for Aglianico grapes, which gain an incredible flavour from stress on the growing vines. The geography of Tuscany is made up of hills and is perhaps the best known wine region in Italy. The range of climate zones from Mediterranean to Continental creates excellent growing conditions for an assortment of fine grapes that line the hillsides. The Alps offer shelter to the vineyards in Veneto, shielding the grapes from potentially harsh conditions that exist north of the mountains.

THE FOOD
Pair this blend with intensely flavoured foods. Grilled red meats are a delicious match, as are braised game meats. Roasted mushrooms are a wonderful accompaniment with their earthy flavour. For cheese, sample with Pecorino.

Passport Wine KitGrenache – Rhone Valley, France • Release Date December 2017

THE WINE
This French varietal has a distinctive combination of fruit and spice in the aroma making for a lively wine. The medium bodied red boasts flavours of red fruit, with hints of anise and tobacco. Fine tannins leave the palate balanced on the finish.

THE REGION
The Rhone Valley begins in the Alps and continues for more than 500 miles along the Rhone River ending at the Mediterranean Sea. Southern Rhone has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers, mild winters and less rainfall than its northern counterpart. Vineyards line both sides of the river and the Mistral wind from the north blows away moisture, brings beautiful sunshine, and cools the landscape in the summers, which is perfect for ripening grapes.

THE FOOD
Grenache is a brilliant wine to match with many types of cuisine. Try with grilled, stewed and braised game meats as well as hearty stews. A roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary would be a wonderful pairing.

Passport Wine KitTwo Roads Red – Dry Creek Valley, California (with Grape Skins) • Release Date March 2018

THE WINE
A real powerhouse, this blend has a bold taste and tannic backbone. The addition of Petit Syrah softens the jammy notes that are characteristic of Zinfandel and the Cabernet Sauvignon lends texture. Dark ripe berry aromas blend with smoke and spice elements that lead into flavours of black cherry, vanilla, and black pepper with a lasting finish.

THE REGION
Just south of Sonoma County, with only two roads and over 60 wineries boasting 9,000 acres of vineyards, you will find the rich soils of Dry Creek Valley. The region experiences warm days as the mountains block strong ocean gusts from reaching the vineyards planted throughout the hills. Fog from Sonoma often rolls into the valley in the afternoon, bringing a gentle cooling effect that continues into the evening. This fog slows the ripening process allowing the grapes to develop balanced acidity while still benefiting from the California sun.

THE FOOD
The tannins in this wine pair well with richer, more fatty foods – think barbequed meats like densely marbled marinated steaks or braised short ribs. A creamy mushroom stroganoff would also be a beautiful match. When pairing with cheese, consider bold flavours like Parmesan, Peau Rouge and Aged Cheddars.

Passport Wine KitViognier Roussanne Marsanne – Northern Rhone & Savoie, France • Release Date January 2018

THE WINE
This enchanting white Rhone blend marries three varietals, Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne into one tantalizing off-dry wine. Peach, pear and honeysuckle in the bouquet make way for hints of spice, pear, tangerine and fresh rose petal on the palate. Crisp and balanced, the finish allows one to fully enjoy the floral and fruit flavours.

THE REGION
Northern Rhone, a smaller part of the larger Rhone Valley region, spans just 40 miles long. To the west, you find Savoie in an alpine location, bordering Switzerland. Both regions host vineyards planted on steep mountains and hillsides, as much as 820 to 1804 feet in elevation. Northern Rhone’s climate varies with warm summers, cold winters and more precipitation than its southern sister. Savoie, despite its location, has a warm microclimate – southern/southeastern sun and close bodies of water help to regulate the cold and provide great fruit growing conditions.

THE FOOD
The combination of varietals in this wine makes it quite versatile. Sip it alongside tuna sashimi and California rolls as well as grilled or baked haddock fillets. Grilled pork, veal and chicken are also natural matches.

18L Premium Wine Kits • Individual Release Dates Below

Passport Wine KitCabernet Sauvignon Rosé – Sacramento County, California • Release Date: February 2017

The Wine: Fresh strawberry on the nose, with watermelon and cranberry accents. This crisp, fragrant rosé carries juicy strawberry flavours and tart red fruit notes on the palate. Balanced and refreshing, with crisp acidity and a subtle minerality.

The Region: Sacramento County lies in the middle of the Central Valley, California’s prime agricultural region. It extends from the low delta lands between the Sacramento & San Joaquin rivers to just north of the state capitol of Sacramento, continuing east to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Sacramento County is graced with a hot Mediterranean climate, and receives an average of just 350mm of precipitation per year. The moderately rocky nutrient-rich clay loam soil retains moisture while allowing excess water to drain away, creating fertile grounds for the vines to thrive in the hot California sunshine.

The Food: Turkey burgers, meat pies, tourtiere, and cured sausage platters are great matches, as are light summer salads, greek salads, tapas, and feta cheese. Enjoy with practically anything off the grill or serve on its own lightly chilled. Click here for fact sheet.

Passport Wine KitKookaburra Red – Riverland Region, Australia • Release Date: March 2017

The Wine: A bold, charismatic blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro loaded with raspberry, blackberry, spice, and a supple finish. Grenache brings ripe, jammy fruit flavours and hints of cinnamon spice. Shiraz provides a punch of blackberry, and plum flavours with elements of black pepper spice, while Mataro brings savoury, earthy notes, spicy elements and texture.

The Region: South Australia’s picturesque Riverland region boasts over 300kms of the River Murray running through it, and wildlife is plentiful in the area. Kookaburras, native to Australia, are abundant here and their ‘laughing’ call is a common chorus along vineyards and riverbanks. With the hot, dry continental climate and minimal rainfall, the river provides much-needed water to the area’s vineyards. The Riverland’s flat terrain and long hours of sunshine mean the vines here receive consistent, quality sunlight, greatly reducing their chance of disease and ensuring fully ripe, flavourful grapes.

The Food: Drink alongside braised meats, grilled lamb with rosemary, meaty pasta dishes, and mushroom stews. Try with earthy dishes like spicy, hearty stews with red meat and root vegetables, mushroom risotto, or eggplant lasagna. Click here for fact sheet.

Passport Wine KitNero D’Avola – Sicily, Italy • Release Date: January 2017

The Wine: A lesser known Italian red wine grape, Nero D’Avola has long been a prized varietal in its native Sicily and in the last decade has been gaining favour in the rest of the world as a serious red, joining the ranks of big Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Nero D’Avola offers aromas of ripe black fruit with notes of vanilla and smoke, and abundant flavours of ripe black cherry & plum with spicy accents, velvety tannins, and a long finish.

The Region: Situated just off the ‘toe’ of Italy’s boot, Sicily is home to a number of active volcanoes, which create rich, fertile soils ideal for agriculture. The largest of the Mediterranean islands, Sicily enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters, and hot, dry summers with consistent sunshine. This combination of mineral-rich soil and reliable weather create near perfect conditions for growing wine grapes.

The Food: A great wine to match with rich meats. Try with beef stews, game meats, or barbecued angus burgers topped with bacon. Black bean or shitake mushroom based dishes also make for excellent matches. Click here for fact sheet.

Passport Wine KitRiesling – Clare Valley, Australia • Release Date: January 2017

The Wine: Citrus aromas with underlying floral notes make for a fresh and vibrant aroma. Juicy lemon-lime flavours fill the palate, accented by orange blossom and apple notes, mineral tones, and a backbone of crisp, energetic acidity. The subtle sweetness really makes the citrus sing in this succulent & refreshing white.

The Region: Located in the Mount Lofty Ranges, most of the region’s vineyards are planted at elevations between 400-500m. The climate is moderate-continental with long, warm summer days and cool to cold nights. The higher altitude of the region ensures these colder nights, slowing the ripening of the grapes and allowing the fruit to ripen more evenly, retaining crisp acidity. Clare Valley is known for its Rieslings, and wines grown here are heralded for their hallmark Riesling flavours – citrus, lime, apple, with mineral notes and crisp natural acidity.

The Food: This Riesling’s sweetness and acidity make it an easy pairing for a variety of dishes. Try with lightly to moderately spiced Asian inspired dishes, pad thai, or Tex-Mex dishes with cilantro & avocado. A fantastic pick for cheese fondue and creamy cheeses. Click here for fact sheet.

Passport Wine KitSyrah – Lanquedoc, France • Release Date: December 2016

The Wine: Signature peppery bouquet, with raspberry and earthy notes; this classic varietal from Southern France is complex and harmonious with soft tannins. Flavours of blackberry and black cherry are accented with spicy black pepper and oak, hints of mint, herbs, mocha, and faint licorice on the finish.

The Region: The Languedoc region hugs the Mediterranean coastline of France and has been planted with vineyards since the 5th century BCE. Vineyards here are generally planted in the coastal plains of the Mediterranean, known to be some of the hottest, most arid regions of France. With an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, low rainfall, and temperatures regularly above 30C, the weather provides excellent growing conditions.

The Food: Serve thick homemade burgers with aged cheddar, slow cooked lamb, or other grilled or roasted red meats. Try with hearty casseroles and pepper steaks. Hard, matured cheeses and 70% dark chocolate also pair well. Click here for fact sheet.
